About the Role
As a Utility Locator, you’ll play a crucial role in supporting site investigations by ensuring underground services are identified before intrusive work begins. This role is not just a traditional locating role—you’ll also be involved in site reconnaissance, equipment operation, and team training.
Rather than working for a dedicated utility locating company where you conduct 4-5 locates per day, you will typically complete 1-2 locates per day, with the rest of your time dedicated to other responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Utility Locating (40-50% of role)
- Perform non-intrusive service locating using GPR and locating wands
- Conduct hydro/vacuum excavation (potholing)
- Document findings in basic reports
Additional Duties (50-60% of role)
- Operate machinery (backhoe, excavator, small drill rigs, CPT rigs)
- Conduct site reconnaissance (photography, note-taking, access prep)
- Maintain equipment & warehouse supervision
- Train team members in locating methods & underground service knowledge
What We’re Looking For
- 3 + years’ site-based service locating experience (more preferred)
- Strong experience with non-intrusive locating techniques (GPR, locating wand)
- Competency in hydro/vacuum excavation (potholing)
- Basic report writing skills
- Ability to think critically and problem-solve on-site
- Good verbal and written English communication skills
- Confidence using computers (Windows-based systems)
- Positive, proactive attitude and a willingness to learn
Highly Regarded (Bonus Skills)
- Mechanical/repair skills (troubleshooting & minor equipment repairs)
- Experience operating backhoes or excavators
- Background in engineering-related site work
Why Join Us?
- Work on diverse, meaningful projects across WA & NT
- Less repetitive locating work – variety of tasks every day
- Innovative & informal team culture with professional development opportunities
- No FIFO roster – work primarily in Perth & SW WA
- Competitive salary package based on experience
This is a unique opportunity for a utility locator seeking a broader, more engaging role in the industry. If you're ready to take on a challenging yet rewarding position, we'd love to hear from you!
