Details:

My client is a specialist Australian mine closure consultancy who work across the full closure picture - planning, cost estimation, landform design, mine waste, technical studies and closure execution.

Due to internal move, they currently have an opportunity for a Team Leader in their Engineering Studies Group. The current group lead is staying with the business and moving into a more specialist technical role, so this is a proper handover and set up for success.

The role

The Engineering Studies team provides services in closure cost estimation, technical modelling and conceptual design. They have strong, technical modellers who are highly capable in landform evolution, cover systems and surface water but are looking for someone who can be a conduit between the modelling function and the client. Someone who has the ability to assess a site and work out where the real risks are, decide what needs modelling and why, support the technical specialists, and then turn the results into practical advice a client can use.

It is a combined people leadership / support and technical role with a mix of chargeable project work and running the group.

The work will include

  • Leading the Engineering Studies group - workload, coaching, training and reporting
  • Scoping technical studies and setting the direction of the modelling work
  • Reviewing reports and ensuring quality technical communication across the team
  • Managing projects and budgets
  • Client meetings, updates and technical advice
  • Supporting the design and delivery team where technical studies are needed
  • Occasional site visits

You will need

  • A relevant degree - BEng or BSc. Civil, environmental or geotechnical engineering is preferred, but they are open to environmental science, hydrology or hydrogeology
  • Minimum 10 years' experience
  • Experience leading a team and managing people
  • Client and stakeholder management
  • Strong written and verbal communication, particularly the ability to take technical work and turn it into clear, practical advice
  • Solid project and time management

Also useful

  • Mine closure or landform design background
  • Exposure to modelling - landform evolution, cover systems and unsaturated flow, or surface water. Siberia, SEEP/W, PCSWMM and HEC-RAS are what the team uses, but you will not need all of them
  • Closure cost estimation experience
  • Experience running multidisciplinary or PFS / FS style studies

You do not need to be the deepest technical person in the room. You need enough modelling background to understand how the work is done, manage assumptions properly and know when something needs revisiting.

What's in it for you

  • Competitive salary anticipated in the region $180k - $220k + Super, negotiable on experience
  • Genuine problem solving work across a wide range of sites and commodities
  • A sustainable pipeline in an area of the market that keeps growing
  • Small, technically diverse team - engineers, scientists and geochemists working closely together
  • You will work alongside some of the most recognised modelling specialists in WA
  • Real collaboration across the business rather than working in a silo
  • Flexible working including some working from home, and parking on site
  • Potential for equity in the business longer term
  • Work that leaves a lasting environmental legacy

This is a great opportunity to join a friendly and supportive business with high ethics and values.

Please note, this role is only open to candidates currently based in Australia with full working rights.
